Hallus Valgus/Bunion

What is it?  Hallus Valgus is when the big toe deviates towards the little toe.  This change in position causes swelling of the soft tissues and enlargement of the 1^st metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint at the base of the big.  This enlarged bump is referred to as a bunion.

Prevalence - Hallus valgus and bunions are more common in women than men, due to shoe choice.

Symptoms -

• Swelling at the base of the big toe
• Widening of the foot
• Localised pain in the ball of the foot
• Deviation of the big toe towards the little toe

Causes -

• Overpronation (inwards rolling) of the foot
• Genetic predisposition
• Tight fitting footwear i.e. high heels
