Hallus Valgus/Bunion

What is it?  Hallus Valgus is when the big toe deviates towards the little toe.  This change in position causes swelling of the soft tissues and enlargement of the 1st metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint at the base of the big.  This enlarged bump is referred to as a bunion.

Prevalence - Hallus valgus and bunions are more common in women than men, due to shoe choice.

Symptoms -

  • Swelling at the base of the big toe
  • Widening of the foot
  • Localised pain in the ball of the foot
  • Deviation of the big toe towards the little toe

Causes -

  • Overpronation (inwards rolling) of the foot
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Tight fitting footwear i.e. high heels
